The urban structure of Badalona will be significantly reinforced with the development of the Central Island and its surroundings. The large area known as the Central Island or Can Fradera will be turned into a major city-centre square and communications node, at the meeting point of Line 2 of the underground, bus lines, and the future railway station, when the line is moved inland. This project will be carried out in conjunction with a series of formally independent town planning operations, such as the completion of the slip road that runs parallel to the C31 motorway in the neighbourhood of Sant Crist and the junctions connecting the C31 to the city’s urban fabric, which will allow the construction of a shopping centre in Can Llamas. Together, these projects will have a scope comparable to that of the large-scale operations in Montigalà and the harbour. Taking them as a whole, these schemes will provide:
More specifically, the large central square will stand in an area covering 25,000 sq m known as the Central Island, the result of a long process of expropriations, and will form a new urban hub, both for its strategic situation as a link between the historic city centre and the more recent neighbourhoods and also because it will be the site of the new central and intermodal station. The project is currently awaiting the land use study. For its part, the Special Internal Reform Plan (PERI) for Coll i Pujol and Estrella, at present at the town planning stage, includes the construction of a new line of buildings facing Rambla de Sant Joan, the restructuring of the two industrial zones in their transformation into residential areas, and the generation of the necessary urban environment for the area’s integration into the city centre. The plan features the construction, in partnership with Incasol and private operators, of 800 dwellings (200 of them publicly financed), some as part of the Sant Crist scheme, the creation of new public spaces, and the integral restructuring of Rambla de Sant Joan in this area. The PERI for Can Llamas is aimed at the urban restructuring of the space occupied by the former Llamas factory in order to recover a city-centre site that was once industrial but today is waste ground, to form a shopping space (a branch of El Corte Inglés department store), a green space and a public thoroughfare. This operation will facilitate the funding of urban and road improvement throughout the area. The operation to be carried out in the neighbourhood of Sant Crist consists in the development of the PERI for the sites in Abat Escarré Street that run parallel to the C31 motorway. Its objectives are:
All these projects are scheduled for completion in 2008. |
