According to 2009 social security data, Badalona has nowadays a highly diversified economy with a total of 5157 companies employing 42890 persons, 90% of which are SMES with fewer than 10 workers. There are also 9.000 self-employed workers.

As can be seen in the table, most of the employment is in the service sector with 70 % of the companies and 71 % of the employees. Industry is at the European level with 15 % of the companies and 17 % of the employees, since the city has an important industrial history.
Badalona has important industrial estates. Industrial activity reaches 50 % in the most ancient ones. Since 2005, there are three new activity areas in the city: Les Guixeres estate, Granland Business Park and Bonavista estate which has been recently extended.

Metallurgical and dressmaking / fashion sectors are the most important industrial sectors with 192 companies employing 1375 people and 200 companies employing 1513 people respectively.

In services, the highlights are the hospital activities (13.25% of the workforce), retail trade (7.49%), government (6.04%) and cleaning activities (5.36%). These activities are not the ones accumulating more companies since these activities are marked by the presence of medium to large enterprises. In this sense, the activities with more companies are retail trade (21.99%),  beverage establishments (7.54%) and other personal services (6.52%).
