Commercial distribution is one of the mainstays of
the Badalona economy, with 3,000 shops and 23% of the working population
employed in the sector. Today Badalona has nine traders’ associations
corresponding to different areas in the city.
Another of Badalona’s strong points from the
shopping point of view is Montigalà Estate, which is the biggest
concentration of megastores anywhere in Catalonia.
The urban development of the city will bring with it
the growth of both the number and the total surface area of its shops,
with new infrastructures currently under way such as the Màgic
BDN project and a future branch of El Corte Inglés.
In order to ease the coexistence
of small and large shops, and in view of the expansion of the surface
area devoted to trading, a Commercial Facilities Planning Scheme (POEC)
has been devised that is also intended as a tool for the modernisation
of small shops and the promotion of shopping areas.
Badalona also has six municipal markets which
together form the Federation of Municipal Market Retailers’ Associations
of Badalona.
